HEALING TRAUMA

Our bodies are brilliant

our bodies are intelligent

our bodies are intentional..

and they are always working in an effort to protect us.

There is nothing wrong with you.

There is something wrong with what happened to you.

Being human can feel very challenging when you find yourself grappling with anxiety, confusion, frustration, numbness or depression on a day to day basis. You might be a high functioning person yet something buried inside prevents you from fully enjoying your life and relationships.

Often chronic symptoms will show up, ringing an alarm bell for attention. You might be wondering what wounds (present, past or ancestral) are at the root of your health or wellbeing being compromised, and how can I address them effectively?

We have a brilliant system within our body called the Autonomic Nervous System that is responsible for so many of our automatic processes, like digestion, heart rate and more. It's also our self protective system that constantly perceives, stores and responds to our lived experiences.

When we experience stressors or traumatic events that are overwhelming for our system to cope with, our brilliant nervous system innately do what it knows how to do innately to keep us safe. The challenge arise when our body remains in these states of self protection such as fight, flight, freeze or fawn longer than needed due to the missed opportunity to metabolize the source of distress. Consequently, the trauma is internalized which can affect our mental, emotional and physiological wellbeing overtime. Symptoms of chronic anxiety, feeling easily agitated, vigilant, shut down, depressed, PTSD, digestive issues and other mental health conditions are often reflecting a distressed nervous system seeking healing.

Addressing directly the nervous system is essential to cultivate a sense of inner safety, allowing the person to feel calm, centered, grounded, connected and well resourced. This helps explain the limitations of talk therapy and the great healing impact of somatic, energetic and psychedelic approaches to trauma healing such as Somatic Experiencing, Hakomi, Polyvagal Theory, MDMA therapy, etc.
